WHY SCHOOL HEALTH MATTERS

Health and Academic Success

Academic success and long term positive health outcomes are both strongly linked to  child health.  There is a well recognized link between health and education. Students who are healthy are more prepared to learn.  Health should be regarded in a holistic manner that considers the student's physical health both related to chronic disease management and preventative health, social-emotional well-being, and mental health.  To that end school health becomes a function of the entire school environment in an effort to address the whole child to address health related barriers.

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child

Health and education work hand in hand.  Everyone is impacted differently based on social and economical impact, for example.  Schools are a very important space  for reaching children and adolescents to provide health services and support.   School health is a broad framework that includes multiple areas  working in collaboration including health education, community involvement, employee wellness, physical environment, social and emotional climate, physical activity, health services, nutrition, and family engagement.  When a whole child model is endorsed for wellness and school health framework,  it leads to addressing students in the most holistic manner.
